Felix Assah

Dr. Felix K. Assah is a Wellcome Trust Training Fellow in Public Health and Tropical Medicine based at the Health of Populations in Transition Research Group, Yaoundé, Cameroon. He qualified in Medicine from the Faculty of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences of the University of Yaoundé I in Cameroon in 2001, and then subsequently trained in Epidemiology and Public Health at the University of Cambridge, UK, obtaining an MPhil and then a PhD in 2005 and 2009 respectively. During his training, he was a Wellcome Trust Masters Training Fellow, a Gates Scholar and an Overseas Research Scholar.

His research interests are in epidemiology of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, obesity, hypertension, and their risk factors. More specifically, his focus is in understanding the changing patterns of lifestyle risk factors in populations undergoing transition (urbanization and westernization); how these relate with and affect the patterns of diseases, with a view to contribute to primordial or primary prevention of these non-communicable diseases. His current research focuses on using objective measurement methods to assess the differences and changing patterns of physical activity between rural and urban dwellers in Cameroon in view of developing locally adapted interventions for physical activity promotion.
