The Chinese Academy of Sciences was founded on November 1,1949 on the basis of the institutions of the institutions of the former Central Academy of Sciences. It is the country’s highest academic institution and comprehensive research and development center in natural sciences and high technology. Under the Academy there are 5 academic divisions, 123 institutes, more than 400 S&T enterprises, and more than 20 supporting units including 3 universities, 2 printing houses, 5 R&D centers for scientific instruments and 5 documentation and information centers. They are distributed over various parts of the country. Thirteen branches of the Academy have been established in Shanghai, Nanjing, Hefei, Changchun, Shenyang, Wuhan, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Kunming, Xi’an, Lanzhou, Xinjiang, and Hainan. Today, the Academy employs more than 60,000 S&T personnel, including more than 15,600 senior professionals, 24,700 middle-ranking ones, and 19,100 junior ones.
