NON-COMMUNICABLE DISEASES (NCDs) – IAMP Survey Report
As follow-up to the Political Declaration of the High-level Meeting of the United Nations General Assembly on the Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases (New, York, 20-21 September, 2011) and The Lancet article on the NCD Alliance, IAMP member academes have been organizing activities and workshops, in their countries and/or regions, to further the understanding on Non-Communicable Diseases.
A Regional Workshop on “Non-Communicable Diseases: Prevention and Control of Cardiovascular Diseases and Cancer” (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 3-5 May 2012) was organized by the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC), the National Academy of Medicine (ANM), Latin American Association of Academies of Medicine (ALANAM), InterAcademy Medical Panel (IAMP) and the InterAmerican Network of Academies of Sciences (IANAS). The overall objective of the workshop was to strengthen the idea that prevention and control should be a priority among governments, international organizations, civil society and the private sector, who should join forces in order to revert the current situation. Another crucial goal of the workshop was to stimulate cooperation among the Academies of Medicine of the Americas, encouraging them to take on a more proactive role in the coordination and mobilization of their national societies, aiming towards promoting actions focused on prevention and control of non-communicable diseases. The workshop proceedings are in preparation; the sessions can be watched on Youtube here.
