DISEASE CONTROL PRIORITIES PROJECT PUBLICATIONS TO BE LAUNCHED IN BEIJING AT IAMP GLOBAL MEETING

The InterAcademy Medical Panel (IAMP) 2nd Global Meeting, scheduled to take place 2-6 April 2006 in Beijing, China, will serve as the launch of the Disease Control Priorities Project's (DCPP) three flagship publications:

∑ Disease Control Priorities in Developing Countries, 2nd Edition (DCP2), a cost-effective analysis of health interventions, health systems, and treatment and prevention programs for a comprehensive range of diseases and conditions.
∑ The Global Burden of Disease and Risk Factors, a compendium of worldwide deaths by cause, burden of disease, and risk factor data.
∑ Priorities in Health, a distillation of DCP2 written for policymakers that will be translated into six languages.

The publications have been designed to provide flexible, practical, and simple tools to assist countries to reach the Millennium Development Goals for health (MDGs).

DCPP will also unveil an interactive website at the IAMP meeting (www.dcp2.org). The site will allow visitors to ask questions of global health experts; view content by region, country, disease or condition; and select, organize, and download specific chapters of the publications through a “create your own book” function.

Beyond Beijing, launch events are also planned for India, Africa and Latin America, and sessions on DCPP findings will be held at global health events around the world throughout 2006. DCPP, for example, will present the project's main messages to 192 health ministers at the World Health Assembly in May in Geneva. Special efforts will also be made to engage journalists, especially from developing countries, and to commission DCP2-related pieces in major health journals. The goal is to have DCP2's main messages reach as a broad an audience as possible.

DCPP is a partnership between the World Bank, World Health Organization, Fogerty International Center of the U.S. Institutes of Health and Population Reference Bureau. The project receives the majority of its  funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
